10 free things to do with kids at Disney World

| |

Some news you can use for the Disney-bound: It's possible to enjoy some of the perks at Florida's Walt Disney World Resortwithout shelling out $85 ($79 for ages 3-9) to get through the turnstile.
Mary Waring of Mousesavers.com and A.J. Wolfe, who blogs about Disney food, detail 10 free experiences in their twice monthly Frommers.com family-travel column.
The tips are particularly useful for visitors who are arriving late in the day or departing early and don't want to spring for a full-day ticket to the parks. They even give advice on how to avoid parking fees. (Tell the attendant you're going to check out the Magic Kingdom resorts, in which case, parking is free.)
Among other who-knew? suggestions:
-- Get a bird's-eye view of the park by riding the monorail. It's doesn't cost a cent.
-- Enjoy the Magic Kingdom's evening fireworks display from the beach at Disney's Polynesian Resort. Bring a picnic dinner and watch the show across the lake.
-- Stroll Disney's BoardWalk, with its '30s-era Coney Island atmosphere and free street performances (jugglers, fire-eaters) in the evening.
-- Check out the wild action at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge, which has viewing areas to the Arusha savanna, home to giraffe, zebra, kudu, and other animals. (The animals are most active in early morning or at dusk.)
In other how-to Disney news, the latest edition of The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2012 ($19.99 Wiley & Sons) is just out in print and eBook format.
Authors Bob Sehlinger and Len Testa offer strategies for getting the most bang for your buck, including detailed touring plans for optimizing time in the park (i.e. avoiding long lines).
What are your money-saving/time-saving strategies for visiting Disney World and other theme parks?
