Critic's Corner Wednesday: 'Royal Pains,' 'Rescue Me,' 'CSI'
• Another series ends its summer run tonight as USA's Royal Pains
(9 ET/PT) hits its "midseason finale." Or so USA says. Who can even
tell when cable seasons begin and end, let along hit their midpoints?
•Pains is followed by a new Necessary Roughness (USA, 10 ET/PT) that teams star Callie Thorne with a fine actor: Jason Gedrick, as Dani's latest romantic partner.
Even so, you'd be better off watching Thorne's raucous performance in the next-to-last episode of Rescue Me (FX, 10 ET/PT), where her Sheila has her own take on romance.
• What do you do if labor problems knock out your training-camp series?
If you are HBO, you put together a retrospective special: Hard Knocks: A Decade of NFL Training Camps (10 ET/PT).
•CSI
(CBS, 10 ET/PT) begins the story arc that provided the swan song for
Laurence Fishburne's Ray and his serial killer nemesis, Bill Irwin's
Nate Haskell.
You can't fault Irwin for the arc's failure: He
was wonderful, as he invariably is. It was just a darker story than fans
seemed to desire, particularly coming right on top of the Dr. Jekyll
arc.
Might be time for CSI to give serial killers at least a season-long rest.
