Father denies abusing crying child on tour boat
A Southern California man faces charges after authorities say he threw
his 7-year-old son overboard from a harbor tour boat because the boy
would not stop crying.
Tuesday, two days after the incident, Sloane Briles told KTLA-TV that he did nothing wrong and "we were having fun, it was a harbor cruise!" Briles told KTLA he did not hit his son that day and has never hit his son, adding, "I did nothing except jump in the water with my kid."
Orange County Sheriff's deputies who took Briles into custody Sunday say that he was combative and resisted arrest and that they believe he had been drinking, the TV station reports.
Original post, filed Tuesday by Michael Winter: A Southern California man is accused of throwing his 7-year-old son overboard from a harbor tour boat because the boy would not stop crying, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Sloane Briles, 35, of Irvine (mugshot) was charged on suspicion of child endangerment and resisting arrest. The Orange County Sheriff's Office said Briles appeared to have been drinking.
After arguing with his girlfriend aboard a tour boat in Newport Harbor on Sunday, he reportedly hit the boy several times before heaving him off the bow because he continued to cry, a sheriff's spokesman said. The boy was rescued quickly by other boaters.
He and his 6-year-old brother are in the custody of their mother, who is divorced from Briles.
